Automatically summarise YouTube videos

In this lesson we'll teach you how you can transcribe, summarise and extract key insights and information from YouTube videos using Glasp.

Guide

Step 1. Access the YouTube Summary page on Glasp

You can do this by visiting the Glasp website and navigating to the YouTube Summary page.

Step 2. Install Glasp's Chrome extension

You can find the extension on the Chrome Web Store. After installing, it's recommended to pin the Glasp extension for easy access.

Step 3. Open a YouTube video

Choose a YouTube video that you'd like to summarize. You should see a "Transcript & Summary" option on the right side of the video. Click the down-arrow to expand this option.

Step 4. Sign up or Log in to ChatGPT

Click the OpenAI icon on the header of the YouTube video. This will open ChatGPT's page in a new tab. If you haven't created an account for ChatGPT, please make one. If you already have an account, please log in.

Step 5. Summarize the YouTube video

Go back to the YouTube video and click the OpenAI icon again. This will open a new tab of OpenAI. Press Command + V on your keyboard if you're using a Mac, or Ctrl + V if you're using Windows. This action pastes all the transcripts of the YouTube video and starts summarizing it.

Optional steps if you want to save and highlight parts of the video:

Step 6. Save the YouTube video's transcripts

To do this, you need to have a Glasp account. Click the Glasp icon on the toolbar to open the sidebar, then click "Log in / Sign up".

Step 7. Highlight the YouTube video's transcripts

After creating a Glasp account, select sentences on YouTube. A popup will appear, allowing you to choose a color for highlighting the sentence.

Step 8. See your YouTube highlights

Open the sidebar by clicking the Glasp icon on the toolbar. It will show all of your highlights. By clicking your profile icon at the top right, you can go to your profile page. On this page, you can see your highlights and notes. If you click the timestamp, it will open the YouTube video and start playing from that time.

Remember, if the video is too long (like 2 hours), ChatGPT might fail to make the summary. In such cases, you might need to use Claude (shown in another tutorial).
